Jabbawockeez Shows Off Hip Hop Dance Moves At ABDC Audition
JabbaWockeez is an all-male hip hop crew from San Diego who won the first season of the reality dance competition America’s Best Dance Crew. Since winning, the group has gained greater exposure by appearing in various music videos and commercials, touring internationally, and performing with Shaquille O’ Neal at the 2009 NBA All-Star Game. They are known for wearing plain white masks and gloves in order to encourage audiences to focus on their movements as a group instead of on individual dancers. Their name is derived from the Lewis Carroll poem “Jabberwocky” about the eponymous mythical dragon…

In today’s section on hip hop dance videos, we feature the JabbaWockeez!
Hip hop dancing in a crew is all about the synergy between members and not just about how good an individual dancer is. This is what I admire about the JabbaWockeez. At first, I thought the reason for their masks was because expressions in hip hop dance are sometimes hard to emulate so a mask would solve it. However, when I found out the real reason for their masks, I am really touched by this dance group. And you could see the love these crew members have for each other…
When Rynan was talking about a member who passed away, the others put on their masks seemingly not wanting to show their tears… (that might be guessing on my part, but I like to believe in the best of people so.. haha) yea, JabbaWockeez rocks not only in dance excellence but also in having a tight crew of awesome dancers which propelled them to the international success and respect.
okay, enough on the emo stuff haha I really think the JabbaWockeez take every minor detail of their hip hop dance moves and pushes it to perfection. They design every intricate detail of their choreograhpy to fit in snugly with the music. Even beats we might have missed out, the JabbaWockeez have a small nod, a slight tilt, a half turn around or even shiver to go with it. And that’s what makes the choreography a joy to watch — a surprise at every turn!
I agree with JC that their choreography highlighted each member’s strengths though we don’t know who is who. Ultimately after each other’s ‘showcase’, everyone falls back in line so that we, the audience, recognise JabbaWockeez as a whole, as a great dance crew(: This is what teamwork is about.
FYI, they were the champions of ABDC Season #1!
Definitely a great dance crew I love to watch, don’t you agree? What do you think?
